Rashid Johnson was born in Chicago, in 1977, and lives and works in New York. A critical theory framework extends across his paintings, sculptures, photography, and video work, investigating legacies of and possibilities for African American intellectual and cultural life. His work has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions at the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow, the Gran Palais, Paris, the Drawing Center, the High Line, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver. He is the recipient of the 2018 Aspen Award for Art.
