Maroon Bells Scenic Trail
A trip to the Maroon Bells gives families the chance to enjoy a leisurely stroll while taking in spectacular views. The scenic area overlooks the iconic peaks, which tower over Maroon Lake and the Maroon Creek Valley, ideal for a family photo op. Wander along the lake’s perimeter on the well-maintained path and be on the lookout for wildlife roaming the shores. Make a parking or shuttle reservation in advance.
Aspen Mountain Nature Trail
The Aspen Mountain Nature Trail combines a sightseeing adventure with a short, kid-friendly hike. Hop on the Silver Queen Gondola, which runs daily mid-June – Sept 1 and on weekends through September. Enjoy a bird's-eye view views of downtown Aspen and the surrounding peaks on the ride to the top. The Nature Trail begins atop Aspen Mountain, offering panoramic mountain views, and is around 1-mile (round-trip).

Ashcroft Ghost Town
Located 11 miles up Castle Creek Road, Ashcroft Ghost Town tells the stories of a historic mining town. Explore relocated and restored buildings as you stroll along the gravel path that travels about .5 mile through the ghost town. The Ghost Town gives kids the chance to learn and discover Aspen's history in a beautiful, outdoor setting. If the kids are up for more, the trail continues along Castle Creek, passing through open meadows with spectacular mountain views.
East of Aspen Trail
Easily accessible from downtown Aspen, the East of Aspen Trail is a gravel path that begins on the east side of Aspen and passes through the North Star Nature Preserve, a calm, serene section of the Roaring Fork River. The North Star Nature Preserve is home to a range of wildlife including birds, moose, and more, adding the excitement of potential wildlife sightings to this kid-friendly path.

Weller Lake Trail
Located about 9 miles from downtown Aspen, the Weller Lake trail is accessed from Independence Pass. While most alpine lake hikes near Aspen range from moderate to difficult, Weller Lake is a gradual, 1 mile hike. The lake is surrounded by boulders, logs, and mountains, offering scenic views and a rewarding endpoint to keep the kids motivated along the way.
Linkins Lake Trail
Located on Independence Pass, the Linkins Lake trailhead begins at the Lost Man Trailhead, about 18 miles from downtown Aspen, and splits off shortly from the start. The 1.2 mile round-trip hike climbs a little over 500 ft. through an open, alpine landscape. While short, the elevation gain makes this hike a little more challenging. Linkins Lake, a crystal-clear, mountain lake makes the trek worth it. Bring a jacket and layers- the hike begins towards the top of Independence Pass at a high elevation, creating cool temperatures even on summer days.
