Behind the Scenes at the Red Brick Center for the Arts

The Red Brick

This week's guest blog comes from Sarah Roy, Director of The Red Brick Center for the Arts. Read blow as she gives you a special look inside The Red Brick and their creative programming.

Are you visiting Aspen and wondering what is it like to live here?  Asking yourself who are the locals?  Or perhaps Aspen is your home and you are wanting to meet new people and get involved in the community. Come visit the Red Brick Center for the Arts and you will be able to experience a behind-the-scenes look and meet individuals who are helping shape the town.

The Red Brick is home to 8 nonprofits who create enriching programming for the benefit and enjoyment of locals and visitors. Many of the nonprofits are multi-decade long organizations that bring nationally and internationally recognized artists, films, performances to Aspen making it into a small town with a big town feel. The Red Brick is also home to 12 artists who have studio and retail space. These artists work range from ceramics, sculpture, photography, painting, and jewelry design. In addition, the Red Brick boasts a gallery that features exhibitions of contemporary work made by regional artists. Come get to know the Red Brick to see the community at work and mingle with the action.

Here are my top 10 picks of the current programming being created at the Red Brick:

1. He Said, She Said – Red Brick Gallery presents an exhibition of works by Denver artists, Michael Dowling and Annie Decamp. Be sure to check RedBrickAspen.com for most up-to-date hours of operation.

2. Aspen Shortsfest 2021 – Aspen Films 30th annual Oscar qualify film festival is happening April 6 – 11. An improved virtual version will allow viewers to participate in filmmaker discussions and Q&A.

3. Ebb and Flow – Kate Flynn of Mineral and Mine presents a new jewelry collection every month. Inspired by water, this month’s collection, Ebb and Flow is enchanting and renewing.

4. Winter Words – Aspen Words continues their 24th annual author series presenting six virtual events with Pulitzer Prize winners, New York Times best-sellers, and a former U.S. Poet Laureate.

5. New Works by Emily Chaplin – Red Brick West Gallery presents paintings by Emily Chaplin. An avid world traveler, Emily paints landscapes and scenes from her trips around the globe. Working from memory and photo references, she renders her experience of a place often focusing on moments of beauty. Be sure to check RedBrickAspen.com for the most up-to-date hours of operation.

6. JAS Virtual Listen Up!  - Thank you Jazz Aspen Snowmass for not letting the music stop! Jazz Aspen is offering virtual artists discussions and happy hours bringing us world class performances and intimate conversations.

7. National Donate Life Month – Chris Klug Foundation is inviting us all to help celebrate and honor organ donors, organ transplant recipients and anyone who has been impacted by organ donation.

8. Theatre Aspen’s Education – Theatre’s youth programming focuses on cultivating creativity, strengthening collaborations, and building confidence. Offering Story Adventures for elementary age students and Musical Theatre Dance for middle and high school students has got our youth tap dancing and singing out loud!

9. Ceramic Studio 124 – Molly Peacock, Michael Bonds and Liz Heller always have their hands in the mud. Kneading, throwing, pouring, firing and glazing gorgeous ceramic objects. Even the functional ware keeps beauty and form front and center.

10. Afterschool Art Play – Red Brick Center for the Arts honors its roots as Aspen’s former schoolhouse and offers youth arts programming. Lots of laughing, art messes, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, color tissue paper, felt and glue are encouraged in this class.
