Crisp fall air is moving into Aspen and the tree leaves on Aspen Mountain will soon show off gorgeous shades of yellow with scattered orange and red. Make the most of this autumn season in Aspen and take a leaf-peeping bike ride on one of our favorite trails around town.
1. Rio Grande Trail - This popular trail follows the old Denver and Rio Grande Railroad bed along the Roaring Fork River. Surrounded by trees and mostly paved, the Rio Grande Trail is a scenic and fairly easy ride, also popular for families. We recommend riding to Woody Creek and grabbing a bite to eat at Woody Creek Tavern, Hunter S. Thompson's favorite watering hole.
2. Ashcroft/Castle Creek Valley - Castle Creek Valley is a challenging route for road bikers who enjoy riding amongst aspen groves and keeping an eye out for wildlife. Bears and elk may be spotted from the safety of your bike seat! You will also pass the ghost town of Ashcroft, an ideal spot for a break from climbing and exploring the remains of the old silver mining town.
3. Maroon Bells - The road up to Maroon Bells is a rider's paradise with light car traffic and enchanting vistas of Pyramid Peak as you climb to the top. Be sure to take advantage of the rewarding finish at Maroon Lake for a photo opportunity!
4. Smuggler Mountain Road - Mountain bike the switchbacks of Smuggler Mountain Road and take in the views of autumn in Aspen from above! When you reach the top, take a moment to enjoy the panoramic view of town from the Observation Deck. You can then go down the way you came, or continue onto the Lenado or Hunter Creek Trails.
