How To: Get Outdoors in Aspen if you are Living with a Disability.

Adaptive skiing in Aspen

This guest blog comes from Challenge Aspen, a nonprofit organization in Snowmass Village that makes the outdoors accessible to all through year-round adaptive recreation opportunities for people with disabilities.

This guest blog comes from Challenge Aspen, a nonprofit organization in Snowmass Village that makes the outdoors accessible to all through year-round adaptive recreation opportunities for people with disabilities.

Adaptive Ski and Snowboard Lessons: Through partnership with Aspen Skiing Company, Challenge Aspen offers private lessons packages with a PSIA-certified adaptive instructor at a discounted rate for people with disabilities. Adaptive equipment is provided.

Challenge Aspen Skiing

Buddy Days: Buddy days are available to individuals who do not require instruction but require some level of support for a successful day on the mountain. A trained Challenge Aspen staff member or volunteer will assist as needed. For example, an athlete with visual impairment may need a guide to call turns or verbally identify hazards, or a lifelong skier with dementia may need assistance safely navigating the mountain.

Rocky Mountain Retreats: Year-round outdoor recreation-centered retreats open to veterans or active-duty service-members with a service-connected disability through the Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities (CAMO). Thanks to the support of generous donors and grant funding, all Rocky Mountain Retreats are offered at no cost to selected applicants.

Challenge Aspen biking

Community Programming: 8 week summer and winter programs that create opportunities for inclusive participation for youth and adults with disabilities in the Roaring Fork Valley. 

The winter session pairs skiers and snowboarders one-on-one with a trained volunteer for on-snow training days and supports athletes who wish to compete in regional and state Special Olympics, NASTAR Nationals, and X-games Unified.

Summer programming incorporates multiple adaptive recreation activities (paddleboarding, rafting, cycling, bowling, etc.) and opportunities for social interaction (BBQ’s, arts and crafts, movie nights, etc.)
