In conversation with Jon Waterman, Miriam Horn discusses her new book—Homesick for a World Unknown—the first-ever biography of George Schaller, the founding father of wildlife science and conservation.
Miriam Horn is a bestselling author, environmental advocate, journalist, and filmmaker. Her previous books include Rebels in White Gloves, Earth: The Sequel (coauthor), and Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman. She has produced two documentary films, with one premiering at Sundance. Before turning to books, Horn worked at the Environmental Defense Fund and the US Forest Service, and wrote for magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times. Jon Waterman’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Wild Bird, Outside, Men’s Journal, Adventure, and Sailing World. His sixteen books include Into the Thaw, In the Shadow of Denali, Kayaking the Vermilion Sea, and National Geographic Atlas of the National Parks. He was the recipient of a Literary Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts, and has won three Best Adventure Book Awards from the Banff Book Festival, an Emmy, a National Park Service Special Achievement Award, and the Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award. He lives in Carbondale, Colorado.
