Know Before You Go

If you plan to head into the backcountry this winter, do so with safety in mind. Don't head out into Colorado's backcountry unless you know what you're doing or are with someone who does.

Before you go:

Always tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
Prepare a winter emergency kit to keep in your vehicle. Include extra supplies like water, food, sunscreen, and warm layers.
Know your limits. Have the proper training or bring an experienced friend or use a professional guide. Be confident in your ability to use your equipment safely and competently by seeking education and training.
10th Mountain Division Huts and Alfred A Braun Huts are a wonderful Colorado tradition. Guide companies offer guided trips to the huts as well.
Must-have items:
- Backpack
- Water
- First aid kit
- Backcountry shovel
- Avalanche probe
- Avalanche transceiver
- Extra pair of dry gloves
- Extra dry hat
- Flashlight
- Food that is high-energy

Avalanche preparedness:

Take an avalanche safety course.
Contact a guide to make sure you’re avalanche-aware and have the appropriate gear.
Make sure you have a shovel, probe, and an avalanche transceiver.
