Ask A Local: 10 Favorite Winter Activities

Skinning in Aspen

Locals are the heart of our mountain town's character and charm. Some of our favorite Aspen locals have shared their favorite things to do during winter in Aspen. With an insider's glimpse, discover a few of the best ways to experience Aspen and live like a local.

  1. Cross country ski to the Pine Creek Cookhouse and have lunch or dinner.

    - Barclay Dodge, Chef and Owner of Bosq

  2. Gondola laps on Ajax on my snowboard followed by a double cheeseburger at Ajax Tavern and of course, truffle fries. YUM!

    - Chris Klug, Real Estate Broker at Aspen Sotheby's, dedicated to promoting life-saving organ donation - Chris Klug Foundation, Olympic Medalist Snowboarder

    Highland Bowl in Aspen

  3. I love Saturdays at Aspen Highlands, hiking the bowl all day. You are bound to run into friends, get some good exercise, and find deep stashes of powder. Grab a beer and post-ski slice of pizza at Highlands Alehouse.

*Highland Bowl is advanced and expert-only terrain.

    - Christy Mahon, Vice President of Development at Aspen Center for Environmental Studies & the first woman to ski all of Colorado’s 14,000 ft peaks

  4. Wintersköl™ in Aspen brings out the local color in town and is a great opportunity to celebrate community and the people who have made it special. And having another occasion to celebrate skiing in Aspen- why not?! Sköl!

    - Cristal Logan, Vice President of Aspen Community Programs and Engagement at the Aspen Institute

  5. Cross country/skate ski to the Maroon Bells. When do you have the Bells all to yourself? After the 7+ mile cross country ski from T-Lazy 7!

    - Duncan Clauss, Broker's Associate at Sotheby's and founder of the Aspen Brewing Company

Skiing Powder in Aspen

  1. Skiing Aspen Mountain and Tiehack at Buttermilk are my favorites. Aspen is the best on a powder day, and Buttermilk will still be good 5 days after the storm for leftover stashes.

    - Klaus Obermeyer, founder of Sport Obermeyer

  2. Hut trips with laughs & cozy fires.

    - Sam Axness, Adventure Brand Photographer

  3. Skinning Ajax

    - Tess Weaver, Writer and Editor

  4. I love taking yoga classes at O2. It’s an amazing escape from the cold into a warm oasis with a peaceful ambiance.

    - Christy Mahon, Vice President of Development at Aspen Center for Environmental Studies & the first woman to ski all of Colorado’s 14,000 ft peaks

    Dining in Aspen

  5. Dinner in Aspen at any of the amazing restaurants is always better after enjoying a great day on the slopes.

    - Cristal Logan, Vice President of Aspen Community Programs and Engagement at the Aspen Institute
