Buttermilk

The dichotomy of Buttermilk as the home of the X Games as well as the best beginner skiing in Colorado might be confusing at first, but trust us, the “biscuit” can handle the diversity. The mountain is made up of 3 distinct areas: Tiehack, well-loved by uphillers throughout the day, main Buttermilk, and West Buttermilk, a mellow beginners paradise. Aspen Skiing Company hosts full moon dinners on Buttermilk select evenings throughout the winter.

Eat & Drink

On mountain restaurants include the Cliffhouse, at the top of the mountain, boasting a beautiful view of Pyramid Peak, and Bumps, located at the base of the hill on the main Buttermilk side.

Historical Highlights

Courtesy Aspen Historical Society

  • Buttermilk Mountain opened in 1958 with one lift, a T-bar lift that went to mid-way up the mountain.
  • In 1985 Aspen Skiing Company allowed snowboarding on the Tiehack side of the mountain on a trial basis. As the home of the X Games, you can believe that the trial went well.

In the Know

  • Ambassadors lead free tours every day on Buttermilk at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. Meet at the Guest Services at the top of the Summit Express Lift.
  • Buttermilk Mountain Uphill Policy allows uphilling during mountain operational hours but requires hikers to follow all designated routes. Aspen Snowmass requires an uphill pass for on-resort uphill access.
