We are highlighting the incredible efforts of the Aspen businesses participating in the Colorado Green Business Network. This program is designed to support and recognize businesses that are committed to sustainable practices. Through this series, we'll showcase how these businesses are making a difference in our community through their impactful initiatives. Below, Aspen Community Church discusses their experience with the Colorado Green Business Network of Aspen and continued dedication to sustainability.
Colorado Green Business Network of Aspen: Aspen Community Church
Aspen Community Church is a progressive congregation with a commitment to community and outreach, a love of music, learning, and traditional worship. Aspen Community Church is a Reconciling Congregation of The United Methodist Church, meaning we welcome all persons regardless of race, nationality, economic status, citizenship, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any defining factor you can think of for which persons suffer bias and discrimination. Sunday worship begins at 9:30 am with fellowship time at 10:30 am. The church facilities are available for use and have been used by the Aspen Music Festival and School, Aspen Science Center, Aspen Words, and AA.
How has the Colorado Green Business Network been helpful to you?
Our minister serves on a Church task force to make better use of natural resources. So, the Colorado Green Business Network (CGBN) was able to offer Aspen Community Church, as well as other Colorado Churches, ideas, encouragement and tools to evaluate the church's use of energy resources. The CGBN “Green Biz Tracker” was easy to use, which made getting started easy.
Sustainability Initiatives Highlights
- We have established plans to change out older light bulbs for newer, more efficient LED bulbs to reduce energy consumption.
- Updating all thermostats to Wi-Fi enabled programmable thermostats to improve heating efficiency.
- Creation of a Green Team to focus the church on green initiatives that conserve energy and reduce energy cost.
Why Should Other Businesses Join the Program?
Participation is free and there is no obligation. Yet, CGBN provides tangible tools and ideas to reduce energy costs and consumption. The walk through by the staff was very insightful, and we received a detailed report with suggested improvements.
Importance of This Work in Aspen
Aspen is known for its leadership in many ways. By having a local presence of the CGBN, we have better access than most towns. Thus, the CGBN of Aspen is helping Aspen address environmental changes and reduce our overall energy consumption. The Colorado Green Business Network of Aspen is helping our community be a better steward of our natural resources.
Would you like to share any final thoughts or future sustainability plans?
A significant facility improvement will be to upgrade the seals around the windows and doors of Aspen Community Church since they date back to 1890. We plan to engage with CORE as a possible funding source on this project.
