PRESS RELEASE
ASPEN WORDS' 2018 WRITERS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM WRAPS UP WITH YOLANDA WISHER
Philadelphia's former poet laureate to speak in Aspen on Oct. 16

Aspen, CO (October 5, 2018) – The 2018 season of Aspen Words’ Writers in Residence program will come to a close this month with poet Yolanda Wisher. The 2016 poet laureate of Philadelphia, Wisher is currently the curator of spoken word at Philadelphia Contemporary. She will read and discuss her work at a free community event on Tuesday, October 16, at Hooch Craft Cocktail Bar in Aspen.
Wisher is the author of the poetry collection “Monk Eats an Afro” and her work has appeared in a number of anthologies. According to the Poetry Foundation, her poems are “musical, playful and brutal, and she infuses spoken language with blues-informed cadence to engage themes of intimacy, power and identity.” Wisher founded and directed the Germantown Poetry and Outbound Poetry festivals and has served as director of art education for the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.
Along with Wisher, Aspen Words’ residents this season have included the nonfiction writers Alex Mar, Francisco Cantú and Kevin Fedarko, essayist and short story writer Geeta Kothari and novelist and book editor Carole DeSanti. The complete lineup with author bios and event dates is available ataspenwords.org.

The Writers in Residence program is held in collaboration with the Catto Shaw Foundation
