Know before you go: 10 things to bring on a hike in Aspen

hike

The ski season is slowly melting away but don't fret- hiking season is upon us! Whether you're a leisurely hiker or a speed demon, there are countless beautiful hiking options for you here in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Feel like you're forgetting something? Before you jet off on your next hiking adventure, make sure that you're fully prepared.HikingImage

1. Do your research: know the route you're taking and make sure to pack a map and/or guide book. Ute Mountaineer sells hiking trail maps for just a few dollars and their local guides are always more than happy to give advice. While mapping out your route it's also smart to check the weather report. Aspen weather tends to be pretty temperamental.

2. Hydrate! Bring lots of water, especially if you're not used to being at high altitude. Your body will thank you later.

3. Because we are at such high altitude, the elements are much stronger. Always have sunscreen, a hat, and chap stick on hand in order to avoid looking like a lobster.

4. Make sure you have a rain jacket and warm layers, in case the weather takes a surprise turn for the worst.

5. Celebrate your hiking accomplishment with a picnic at the top! Bring snacks or your lunch to refuel.

6. Be sure to capture your hiking memories and the beauty of this wonderful little mountain town with your camera.

7. First- aid kit. Better safe than sorry!

8. Share the experience and bring a friend. Plus, they can be helpful motivators to get you to the top!

9. For longer hikes, a Spot Satellite GPS Messenger is always helpful. The messenger will help if you need to send out for a rescue or just tell your friends you'll be late for your dinner at Matsuhisa.

10. Last but certainly not least, pack some environmental sense and LEAVE NO TRACE! Always carry out everything you carried in. We want to keep our hiking trails clean and pristine for all future hikers.
