Memorial Day Weekend Adventures in Aspen
Kick off your summer with a relaxing long weekend getaway in Aspen.
See the Sights
Independence Pass and Maroon Creek Road typically open to cars before Memorial Day Weekend, giving visitors the chance to experience Aspen's most iconic spots during a quieter time of year.
Independence Pass typically opens to cars the week before Memorial Day Weekend. Winding above alpine valleys and the Roaring Fork River, Independence Pass is among the most beautiful drives. Along the way, explore the Grottos Ice Caves, Independence Ghost Town, hiking trails, and the Continental Divide.
The road to the Maroon Bells typically opens to vehicles in mid-May, making it the perfect time to check a trip to the famous peaks off your bucket list. The valley below is filled with dense pine forests, while the pristine Maroon Lake reflects the stunning, snow-covered peaks, creating a striking contrast. Bike to the Maroon Bells or make a shuttle or parking reservation. For an extra outdoor adventure, hike along one of the many scenic trails or camp beneath the stars with a reservation.
Soar Over the Scenery
Take a ride up the Silver Queen Gondola on Aspen Mountain (sightseeing ticket required). The Gondola will open for summer sightseeing during the weekend (May 23-25) and operate on weekends only (June 6-7 & June 13-14) until June 20th, when it will remain open daily. Enjoy a ride on Aspen's favorite chariot while taking in bird's-eye views of downtown Aspen and the surrounding mountains.
Ride Through the Rockies
Indulge your inner athlete with biking! Cruise down the Rio Grande Trail, a gradually sloped, riverside path, to the Woody Creek Tavern for a delicious meal on their sun-soaked patio. Or, if you’re looking for a challenge, there are a variety of top-notch mountain biking trails and picturesque road biking routes around Aspen.
Step Into Summer
Ready to hit the trails? While there may still be snow patches on the mountains, explore the outdoors with lower elevation hikes. From rewarding mountain climbs to family-friendly strolls, Aspen has a diverse range of hiking routes for all abilities.
Golfing
If golf is more your style, play a round at the Aspen Golf Club while enjoying the incredible mountain views. Whether you’re a regular golfer or new to the sport, golfing is a fun way to get outside and soak up the weekend sunshine.
Go Rafting
Never been rafting? Get your feet wet with an experienced, local guide. From mellow floats to wild rides through rapids, experience an unforgettable day on the river.
