The District is a division of local government that serves a permanent residential population of approximately 5,500. The District service area encompasses the City of Aspen and other outlying metropolitan areas. Water reclamation of domestic wastewater is accomplished by advanced wastewater treatment technology. The wastewater collection system is managed through regular closed circuit TV inspections, routine cleaning and scheduled maintenance. A pretreatment program is in place in order to minimize the amount of fats, oils and grease discharged from the disproportionately large number of food related businesses served. Fats, oils and grease can cause collection system problems and drastically interfere with District's advanced wastewater treatment processes. Properly treated biosolid byproducts are composted at the County Landfill. Compost is available for sale at the landfill. The District also serves as the local state certified water lab. Routine water testing is done for the public at a nominal fee. More information is available at the District website aspensan.com.
