Aspen Film and the Aspen Art Museum proudly partner to present a special rooftop screening of Douglas Sirk’s iconic final film, IMITATION OF LIFE, presented in conjunction with the exhibition Sherrie Levine: 1977–1988.
Sirk, whose films are renowned as the greatest cinematic examples of melodrama, was an important early and enduring interest for Levine. This 1959 masterpiece starring Lana Turner and Juanita Moore tells the story of two single mothers who raise their children together under the one roof following a chance encounter on a Coney Island beach. Ultimately, the film is a socially conscious critique, questioning entrenched hierarchies of race, class, and gender.
