Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez (born September 12, 1973, Havana, Cuba) is a master percussionist, vocalist, and leading exponent of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and the batá drum. He began his musical career at age 11 and moved to New York City in 1998, quickly becoming an in-demand collaborator. Pedrito has recorded or performed with major artists including Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and Sting, and has contributed to more than 100 albums.
He was a founding member of the Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat group Yerba Buena, touring internationally and recording two albums. As a bandleader, he has released two albums—his debut earning a 2013 Grammy nomination, and his second, Habana Dreams (2016), recorded in Cuba and featuring Ruben Blades, Isaac Delgado, Wynton Marsalis, and Angelique Kidjo.
Pedrito’s work also extends to film (Calle 54, Chico and Rita) and notable collaborations, including a 2019 duo album with Alfredo Rodriguez produced by Quincy Jones, and a 2019 recording and live performance with Eric Clapton at the Crossroads Guitar Festival.
