Prof. Mark Jacobson, climate author

05/11/2023
12:00 PM - 02:00 PM

Environment America Research & Policy Center and Aspen’s Explore Booksellers invite you to a webinar discussion with Dr. Mark Jacobson, author of the book No Miracles Needed: How Today's Technology Can Save Our Climate and Clean Our Air on Thursday, May 11 at Noon MDT/2:00 p.m. EDT.

Renowned climate author and Stanford Professor Dr. Mark Jacobson will discuss the findings of his new book with Johanna Neumann, Senior Director of Environment America Research & Policy Center’s Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy. Their conversation will touch on clean energy solutions for every sector of our economy, offer brief histories of today's clean energy technologies, and explain which technologies are not needed as the world moves toward 100% renewable energy. The Zoom audience will have a chance to ask questions as well.

Jeff Bernstein, the Programming Director at Explore Booksellers (described by Ron Charles of the Washington Post as “cutest indie bookstore [he’s ever] seen”), will emcee the event.

Mark Z. Jacobson is a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program at Stanford University. He has published six books and over 175 peer-reviewed papers. His work forms the scientific basis of the Green New Deal and many laws and commitments for cities, states, and countries to transition to 100% renewable electricity and heat generation. He received the 2018 Judi Friedman Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2019, was selected as 'one of the world's 100 most influential people in climate policy' by Apolitical. He has served on an advisory committee to the U.S. Secretary of Energy, appeared in a TED talk, appeared on the David Letterman Show, and co-founded The Solutions Project.

Johanna Neumann serves as the Senior Director, Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy, Environment America Research and Policy Center. She directs strategy and staff for Environment America energy campaigns at the local, state and national level. In her prior positions, she led the campaign to ban smoking in all Maryland workplaces, helped stop the construction of a new nuclear reactor on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and helped build the support necessary to pass the EmPOWER Maryland Act, which set a goal of reducing the state’s per capita electricity use by 15 percent. She also currently serves on the board of Community Action Works. Johanna lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, with her family, where she enjoys growing dahlias, biking and the occasional game of goaltimate.

Jeff Bernstein serves as Director of Programming for Explore Booksellers Bookstore in Aspen, Colorado. Jeff received an A.B., cum laude from Vassar College and his Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from Harvard Law School. Jeff drives the programming for Explore bookstore. He arranges speakers, plans bookstore events, and liaises with the Aspen community to inform them of upcoming programs. Previously Jeff worked as general counsel for the Fund for the Public Interest and as the consumer policy analyst for U.S. PIRG. Jeff, a lawyer and former physics and math teacher, and his mini-Australian Shepherd, Mattie, live in Aspen where they enjoy hiking, backpacking and snowshoeing.
