History scholars and actors Alexander Hunter and Nina Gabianelli will present first-person accounts of ski pioneers Fred Iselin and Gretl Uhl in two Chautauqua-style character performances. Iselin, a successful European ski racer, moved to Aspen from Switzerland (via Sun Valley) in 1947. Iselin became the ski resort’s iconic instructor, pioneering a unique style of skiing and a fresh approach to instructing. Uhl, a German-born skier and the “Queen of Strudel” arrived in Aspen in 1953. After working as an instructor, Gretl took over a newly built ski-in restaurant in Tourtelotte Park on Aspen Mountain that quickly grew famous among local and visiting skiers. Hear from these legendary Aspenites “in their own words” during the conversation-style museum theatre performances for Time Travel Tuesdays in The Vault at the Wheeler Opera House.
