ABOUT DANI LANDI & FERNANDO GARCIA, FOUNDERS & WINEMAKERS OF COMANDO G:
Rayas ... Rinaldi… Rumbo (Al Norte)
In the span of two decades, Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia have gone from passionate and obscure backcountry vigneron to some of the most heralded winemakers in the world. Inspired by the love of their native land and trusting in the instincts and hard work of generations of their ancestors, they rediscovered and restored the ancient vineyards of Garnacha planted high in the Sierra de Gredos Mountains – remote vineyards just a short drive from Madrid but nearly abandoned to history as too unproductive and difficult to farm. These seemingly inauspicious vines possessed a hidden expression of Garnacha where the pale color belies the depth and intensity of the fruit and terruño expression. Rather than the explosive and expansive character typical of Garnacha, they revealed wines that turned this energy inward, creating a sense of thrilling weightlessness and energy that crackles with red fruit and minerality. With the creation of Comando G in 2008, Dani and Fer established the estate by which all others are measured in the Sierra de Gredos, defined a back-to-the-land ethos winemaking that has rippled across Spain and cemented their legacy as among the most insightful and talented winemakers of their generation.
ABOUT ERIC SOLOMON, OWNER OF EUROPEAN CELLARS:
From Rock to Rhone:
As a rock drummer in London in the late 70s, North Carolina native Eric Solomon walked into his local wine bar looking for work and discovered his future vocation was not rock but wine. After studying at the Institute of Masters of Wine, he settled in Manhattan, beginning his new career as a wine importer and talent scout. In 1990, he founded European Cellars, which quickly caught the attention of renowned critics for his off-the-beaten-path selections. For his pioneering efforts, Eric was recognized by Robert Parker as his 2002 Wine Personality of the Year. Food and Wine Magazine awarded him Best Importer of the Year, and he has been a James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional four times. In celebration of European Cellars’ 25th anniversary, Robert Parker remarked, “I first tasted with Eric in 1991/1992, and I have watched him grow as an importer to the point where he may be the finest in the United States.
