Aspen community partners present thirteen classic and new releases exploring popular zombie movies every Wednesday,
December 26, 2018–March 20, 2019, in conjunction with current AAM group exhibition, Zombies: Pay Attention!

ASPEN, COLORADO (December 21, 2018) — Beginning Wednesday, December 26, at 5:15 p.m., and continuing every Wednesday night for thirteen consecutive weeks, the Aspen Art Museum and community partner Aspen Film announce the co-presentation of the AAM’s winter 2019 Movies at the Museum film series, Zombie Survival Movie Club. This free program will feature zombie classics and recent releases alike, beginning with director Michael Curtiz’s 1936 film, The Walking Dead.
Throughout January, the series will pay special tribute to writer-director George A. Romero, the filmmaker commonly held as the creator of the modern zombie film genre. The tribute month culminates on January 30, with Rob Kuhns’s compelling 2013 documentary film about Romero, Birth of the Living Dead. Zombie Survival Movie Clubscreenings will be presented in AAM Gallery 4 among works in the museum’s current exhibition Zombies: Pay Attention! (December 21, 2018–May 5, 2019; AAM Galleries 4, 5, & 6). The series continues through March 20, 2019. A full listing of all films and their descriptions may be found here.
AAM Nancy and Bob Magoon CEO and Director Heidi Zuckerman relates: “Zombies: Pay Attention!, examines the notion of the ‘living dead’ or ‘undead,’ not only within contemporary culture, but also philosophically and psychically. Suspended in an ambiguous state—alive but not living—the figure of the zombie continues to be used by filmmakers, writers, and artists as a metaphor for fear, anxiety, and crisis, as well as a reminder to us all to do things differently before it is too late. I love that we can explore these serious concepts in such an entertaining, compelling way through both the exhibition and movie club, and AAM visitors who attend all thirteen films will receive a free copy of the New York Times bestseller The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead as a gift, so, as is often the case, paying attention has multiple rewards.”
About the Exhibition: Zombies: Pay Attention!
The AAM exhibition Zombies: Pay Attention! features a global constellation of twenty-eight artworks by twenty-four artists, including Huma Bhabha, Will Boone, Elizabeth Jaeger, Rashid Johnson, Bruce Nauman, Sigmar Polke, Ed Ruscha, Tom Sachs, Tracey Snelling, and Piotr Uklański, among others. Through these works, the exhibition reflects on the phenomenon of now ubiquitous representations of “living dead” entities in contemporary culture, as well as what it means to be truly “alive”—highlighting the potentially catastrophic fate of existing in a liminal space between sentient existence and the realm of the “undead.”
