ASPEN ART MUSEUM HONORED AS
2017 NATIONAL MEDAL AWARD FINALIST
AAM among thirty US museums and libraries nominated by Institute of Museum and Library Services for nation’s highest honor in community service
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ASPEN, COLORADO (March 20, 2017) — Today, the Board of Trustees and Director and CEO of the Aspen Art Museum are proud to announce that the Aspen Art Museum (AAM) is among 30 finalists for the 2017 Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Medal Award. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to the community. For 23 years, the award has celebrated 172 institutions demonstrating extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service. IMLS National Medal winners will be announced this spring, with representatives from winning institutions traveling to Washington, DC, to be honored in a White House ceremony.
Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services stated, “The 2017 National Medal Finalists represent the leading museums and libraries that serve as catalysts for change in their communities. It is our honor to recognize thirty notable institutions for their commitment to providing programs and services that improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities. We salute them and their valuable work in providing educational opportunities to their community and celebrate the power libraries and museums can have across the country.”
AAM CEOs Nancy and Bob Magoon and Executive Director Heidi Zuckerman said “On behalf of the Aspen Art Museum Board of Trustees, National Council, staff, and members, we express collective gratitude for the IMLS’s recognition of the AAM alongside our institutional colleagues from around the US as 2017 National Medal finalists. The AAM exemplifies a 21st Century museum model that recognizes the importance of connecting the local to the global. As the only accredited art museum on the Western Slope of Colorado, our commitment to serving vast rural areas has led to innovative art experiences and collaborations throughout the diverse hundred-mile radius of the museum’s community. The acknowledgment by IMLS highlights the importance of this work, and celebrates the many students, community members, and artists whose collective work generates creative solutions for the current and future improvement of our world.”
