WINTERSKÖL

Aspen Film is partnering with the Aspen Chamber Resort Association to present two special Wintersköl screenings. Friday night is on theme with the 2024 Wintersköl slogan ‘Uniting Ski Bums and Bunnies’ with a special screening of WEAK LAYERS (2024) at 7:30 PM, followed by a Q+A with director Katie Burrell. Jan. 12, 2024 - WEAK LAYERS (2024) 7:30 PM | AF Isis Theatre  | Director: Katie Burrell

Weak Layers is a progressive throwback to the cult classics. A female-driven ski comedy set at Lake Tahoe that follows three passionate and lovably rowdy local women on a quest to win a world-famous 72-hour short ski film competition. The film dissects modern, male-driven ski culture while championing the tight-knit local communities in ski towns worldwide. If ever there was an ode to mountain town life, this is it.

Tickets for WEAK LAYERS are priced at $7.30 in honor of the 73rd Wintersköl and are available at https://isistickets.btmcinemas.com/movie/weak-layers

Jan. 14, 2024 - FREE Screening: ABOMINABLE (2019) 4:00 PM | AF Isis Theatre

Directors: Jill Culton + Tom Wilderman

ABOMINABLE is an animated feature from DreamWorks that follows three teenagers who must help a Yeti return to his family while avoiding a wealthy man and a zoologist who wants him for their own needs.

Feb. 7, 2024: MALTESE FLAMINGO (1986)

7:30 PM | AF Isis Theatre

This 1986 classic is the first film that “broke” worldwide for Greg Stump and his filming partner Bruce Benedict. Director Stump was deeply influenced by Hunter S. Thompson’s Gonzo journalism and Ralph Steadman’s “Ink Splotched” illustrations. Comedy bits throughout, Maltese Flamingo is like no other ski movie before or after. Beloved skits, including “The Secret Life of Sleeping Bags,” propel the film to “Fly The Coop.”

Starring: Tony Hawk, Scott Kennett, Lynne Weiland, Mike Hattrup, Glen Plake, Geoff Stump, Chris Haslock, Robert Aguirre, Lee Lee Morrison, Scot Ogren, Jeff “Wiley Coyote” Coffin, “Big Dan” Curtis, Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi and Lance Mountain.

This 1990 film was set against the timeline of the first Gulf War. While not blatantly political, the film walks a tightrope between war and pursuing pleasure, like skiing during a time of war. The film features the first-ever “BoarderCross” competition, a blistering windsurfing sequence with Laird Hamilton, and the second-ever “extreme skiing’ contest.

Starring: Scot Schmidt, Dan Donnelly, Laird Hamilton, Davey McCoy, Ace MacKay-Smith, Jason Moore, Rob Boyd and Jimbo Morgan.

Soundtrack featuring: Seal, 808 State, Sugar Cubes (Featuring Bjork), Iggy Pop, Ice-T, Hoodlum Priest.

7:30 PM | AF Isis Theatre

Greg Stump’s most famous film, BLIZZARD OF AAHHH’S, is regarded by some as one the best ski movies ever made. It is the first collaboration between Greg Stump and Scot Schmidt, as well as the launch of Glen Plake as a ski media star.

The 30th Anniversary Edition includes a never-before-seen prologue and epilogue.

Starring: Scot Schmidt, Glen Plake, Mike Hattrup, Rasta Stevie, Scot Kennett, Geoff Stump, Lynne Weiland, and Zudnick the dog.
