THE ASPEN INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES ITS WINTER PROGRAMMING

Programs include a Hurst Lecture Series event featuring renowned artist Richard Carter, as well as Great Decisions, Great Books and Teen Socrates seminars

ASPEN, CO, November 8, 2023 – The Aspen Institute is pleased to announce its lineup of public programs this winter taking place in person on its Aspen Meadows campus in Aspen, Colorado. Programs include a Hurst Lecture Series event featuring renowned artist Richard Carter, as well as Great Decisions, Great Books, and Teen Socrates seminars.

“Our winter programs are popular among locals valley-wide, and are a great chance to learn from one another," noted Cristal Logan, vice president, Aspen Community Programs and Engagement. “These affordable, accessible programs truly build community and are a great way to meet people."

Registration is open for all winter programs and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions in each series. Scholarships are available to anyone in need of financial assistance. Learn more at www.aspeninstitute.org/community.

The Winter 2023-2024 schedule is as follows:

Hurst Lecture Series

Richard Carter's Observable Universe

Wednesday, December 20; 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Featuring Richard Carter, renowned artist, cofounder of the Aspen Art Museum, and former studio assistant to Bauhaus artist and designer Herbert Bayer from 1972 to 1978, in conversation with Andrew Travers, Bayer Center’s Penner Manager of Educational Programs, and moderated by Genna Moe, Senior Director of the Society of Fellows at the Aspen Institute. Carter will discuss his work with Bayer, his involvement in the evolving Aspen art scene over the past five decades and his new exhibition, Richard Carter’s Observable Universe, on view in the Paepcke Gallery (1000 N. 3rd St.) from October 2, 2023 through April 12, 2024. Spanning 2002 to 2021, these mixed media pieces mark a break from Carter’s signature geometric and constructivist paintings and instead reflect his intense study of Earth sciences and astronomical, natural, and geological phenomena.

Location: Paepcke Auditorium
Free and open to the public; registration is required here.
