The Aspen Institute to Welcome Barry Bergdoll on August 5
Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History to be featured in the McCloskey Speaker Series
ASPEN, CO, July 22, 2019 –– The Aspen Institute is pleased to present Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History at Columbia University, Dr. Barry Bergdoll. This lecture is a part of the Bauhaus 100: Aspen celebration of the centennial anniversary of the Bauhaus. Dr. Bergdoll will look at the difficult task of distinguishing the Bauhaus as school from the Bauhaus as propaganda machine.
This event will take place on August 5, 2019 from 4:30-5:30pm in the Doerr-Hosier Center on the Institute’s Aspen Meadows campus. The McCloskey Speaker Series is made possible by a generous donation from the McCloskey Family Charitable Foundation.
Barry Bergdoll, Ph.D, has published and organized exhibitions on a broad range of subjects in modern architectural history from the French Enlightenment to the present, most recently an edited volume on the Bauhaus-trained architect and furniture designer, Marcel Breuer (2018). Bergdoll was Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art from 2007 to 2014, where he co-curated with Leah Dickerman, the exhibition, Bauhaus 1919-1933, workshops for modernity.

For over four decades, Chef Waters has been a champion of local sustainable agriculture and her foundation, Edible Schoolyard, advocates for free school lunches and sustainable food curriculum in every public school. Her many accolades include election into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Medical School’s Global Environment Citizen Award, induction into the French Legion of Honor, the National Humanities Medal, and numerous James Beard Foundation Awards.

A Nation of Weavers
Featuring David Brooks, executive director of Weave: The Social Fabric Project at The Aspen Institute, op-ed columnist for The New York Times, and author of The Second Mountain in conversation with Dan Porterfield, president and CEO of The Aspen Institute. The Weave program was founded out of a response to the social fragmentation in our nation, where feelings of distrust, loneliness, division and exclusion are prevalent. Weave aims to illuminate the work of individuals across the country who are making tremendous strides in their communities toward reconnection and relationship building.

Featuring Janet Yellen, distinguished fellow at Brookings Institution and former Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, and Kevin Warsh, distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution and former member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve in conversation with Neil Irwin, senior economics correspondent for The New York Times. The panel will discuss the current state of the economy, how it’s impacted by world affairs, and what tools the Federal Reserve has at its disposal to influence monetary policy.

The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing
Featuring Daniel Pink, New York Times bestselling author of When, To Sell is Human, Drive, and A Whole New Mind, in conversation with Aspen Institute President and CEO Dan Porterfield. Pink will discuss the emerging science of timing — including the hidden pattern of the day and how to recast our schedules to navigate it, how to take breaks that restore mental energy and acuity, why midpoints (of a project or even a life) sometimes drag us down and sometimes fire us up, and what rowing teams, choirs, and lunch deliveries in India can teach us about group synchronization, purpose, and belonging.
