The Aspen Institute to Welcome Helen Fisher on July 16
Biological anthropologist and author to be featured in Murdock Mind, Body, Spirit Series

ASPEN, CO, July 2, 2019 –– The Aspen Institute is pleased to feature biological anthropologist and author Dr. Helen Fisher. Dr. Fisher will talk to Aspen Daily News reporter Alycin Bektesh about the neuroscience of happiness in long-term relationships, how our biology and personality guides who we love, trends in modern courtship, why she’s optimistic about relationships in the digital age, and how to use brain chemistry to keep love alive. This event will take place on July 16, 2019 from 5:30-6:30 pm in Paepcke Auditorium on the Institute’s Aspen Meadows campus.

Tickets are $25 and are on sale now at www.aspenshowtix.com, (970) 920-5770, or in person at the Wheeler Opera House. Early ticket purchase is encouraged, as a full-capacity audience is expected for this event. Doors will open at 4:45 pm, and any unclaimed tickets will be sold at the door.

The Murdock Mind, Body, Spirit Series reflects the founding principles of the Aspen Institute—a commitment to nurturing the whole individual—by bringing a range of experts, innovators, and leaders to Aspen to discuss their research and share the latest revelations about health and wellness. The series is generously underwritten by Gina and Jerry Murdock.

Dr. Helen Fisher, PhD is a biological anthropologist, a senior research fellow at The Kinsey Institute of Indiana University, a member of the Center for Human Evolutionary Studies in the Anthropology Department at Rutgers University, and chief scientific advisor to Match.com. She uses brain scanning to study the neural systems associated with sex, love, and romantic attachment and is currently studying the biological basis of personality and examining the neurochemistry of leadership and innovation. She has written six internationally bestselling books and many articles on the brain science of human social behavior. Fisher’s bestselling books include Why We Love; Why Him? Why Her?; and Anatomy of Love. She is a TED all-star and a recipient of the American Anthropological Association’s Distinguished Service Award.

Alycin Bektesh is an award-winning multimedia journalist recognized for her public affairs reporting and newsroom leadership. She currently reports on government affairs, health, and housing for the Aspen Daily News. Her work can also be found in theAspen Sojourner, and Unearth Women magazine. She previously served as the news director at Aspen Public Radio where she was recognized by the Colorado Broadcasters Association for Best Public Affairs program and Best Community Event for her series of town halls on housing in the Roaring Fork Valley. She has won numerous awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, including being recognized for producing 2014’s Best Election Day Coverage in the state of Indiana. Alycin has also been recognized by the Association of Women in Communications, and was named the 2015 Emerging Leader by the City of Bloomington’s Commission on the Status of Women for her work in mentoring young female journalists and covering issues of social justice and inequality.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE ASPEN INSTITUTE

Tuesday, July 9
McCloskey Speaker Series
Populism, Polarization, and National Identity
Featuring Francis Fukuyama, author of Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment in conversation with Elliot Gerson, executive vice president at The Aspen Institute. In 2014’s The Origins of Political Order, Fukuyama wrote about the decline of American Institutions at a time when powerful interest groups were on the rise. Since then, the world has seen an influx of political outsiders who seek to connect directly with “the people”. The people, however, tend to be a small segment of the population who are often defined by narrow identity terms. In his newest book, Fukuyama examines the origins and effects of modern identity politics and explores how countries can create national identities based on the common values of their populace.
