20th Anniversary Winter Words Series Continues with National Geographic Storytellers Kevin Fedarko and Pete McBride

Aspen, CO (January 25, 2017) –  On February 7th, Aspen Words continues its 20th Anniversary Winter Words series with Kevin Fedarko, a New York Times-bestselling author of The Emerald Mile, and Pete McBride, an award-winning photographer, writer, and filmmaker from Aspen. At Paepcke Auditorium, Fedarko and McBride will discuss the role that storytelling can play in protecting the Grand Canyon, the crown jewel of America’s national parks system, which celebrated its centennial in 2016.

Together, Fedarko and McBride recently completed a 700+ mile thru-hike along the Grand Canyon’s interior rim, documenting the development challenges threatening the National Park. Their story, with words by Fedarko and photography by McBride, appeared in the September 2016 issue of National Geographic. They will spend much of 2017 sharing their story through various platforms and traveling across the country to increase awareness around conservation issues and the Grand Canyon.

Fedarko is based in Flagstaff, Arizona and has written for Esquire, National Geographic, the New York Times, and other publications. He served on the Time foreign affairs desk before joining Outside as a senior editor. His first book, The Emerald Mile, takes readers on a historic boat ride down the Colorado River, while documenting the history of the American environmental movement. It won the National Outdoor Book Award and the Reading the West Award, and was a finalist for both the PEN Literary Sports Writing Award and the Banff Mountain Book Award.

Aspen native Pete McBride is a self-taught photographer, filmmaker, writer, and public speaker who has traveled on assignment to over 75 countries. After a decade working abroad and completing a Knight Fellowship for journalism at Stanford University, McBride began documenting the Colorado River, culminating in a book and three award-winning short documentaries. His work has garnered awards from the Banff Mountain Film Festival and the North American Society of Journalists, and he was named a “Freshwater Hero” by the National Geographic Society.

As part of their Winter Words visit, Fedarko and McBride will speak at Aspen Middle and High School assemblies on February 8th.

Until listed as “Sold Out,” $25 tickets are available at aspenshowtix.com or at the Wheeler Opera House Box Office.  A limited number of tickets may be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the door of the event.

Three additional Winter Words events will follow Fedarko and McBride’s talk: Yaa Gyasi (February 28); Adam Gopnik (March 21); and Stephanie Danler, Anna Noyes, and Molly Prentiss (April 4).

AW’s mission is to encourage writers, inspire readers, and connect people through the power of stories.
