Aspen, CO (May 13, 2019) – The 2019 Writers in Residence program kicked off in May with award-winning author Luis Jaramillo, who is spending the month in Woody Creek, CO. Jaramillo is the director of the creative writing program at The New School in New York City and author of “The Doctor’s Wife,” one of NPR’s Best Books of 2012. He will read and discuss his work with Aspen-based novelist and screenwriter Scott Lasser at a free community event on May 23 at Hooch Craft Cocktail Bar in Aspen.
“The Doctor’s Wife,” which paints a portrait of a family in a series of short chapters, is a winner of the Dzanc Books Short Story Collection Contest, which celebrates “imaginative and inventive writing.” Oprah.com called the book “poignant and glittering” while best-selling author Scott Turow noted: "'The Doctor's Wife' is storywriting at its best; lean, even epigrammatic, each of these stories offers a beautifully realized insight into the life of three generations of a family in the Pacific Northwest.” Free copies of book are available to the community at the Aspen Words office in the Red Brick building through the organization’s Catch & Release program.
While in Aspen, Jaramillo plans to edit his next novel, tentatively titled “The Witches of El Paso,” and inspired by family lore passed on from his Mexican-American grandmother as well as his grandfather, whose relatives settled in what is now New Mexico in the early 17thcentury.
Following Jaramillo, June’s Writer in Residence will be New York Times best-selling authorKaui Hart Hemmings, whose novel “The Descendants” was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film directed by Alexander Payne and starring George Clooney. Her newest novel, “Testimony from Your Perfect Girl,” was released this month.
