Multi-agency partnership unveils final Maroon Bells Scenic Area Comprehensive Recreation Management Plan

Plan provides framework for sustainable management while fostering positive visitor experiences and protecting nature

ASPEN, COLO. (January 29, 2024) – A multi-agency partnership announced its completion of a comprehensive management plan for the Maroon Bells Scenic Area (MBSA). The Maroon Bells Comprehensive Recreation Management Plan (CRMP) is a visionary blueprint for the sustainable management of the MBSA in the White River National Forest near Aspen. The Maroon Bells, a world-renowned destination, welcomed over 175,000 visitors in 2022 alone, engaging in a diverse range of recreational activities.

The vision of the CRMP is to proactively and sustainably manage users, access, and infrastructure to provide positive and equitable outdoor recreation experiences while preserving the natural resources of the Maroon Creek corridor. Developed between February 2022 and December 2023, the plan is the result of extensive collaboration, including dozens of meetings between stakeholders, the public, and local elected officials.

“The project team sought to capture the needs and desires of various groups, fostering a balanced approach between quality recreation, positive visitor experiences, and environmental conservation for a sustainable future for the Maroon Bells Scenic Area,” said Kevin Warner, district ranger for the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District of the White River National Forest.

“During the planning period, over 220 public comments and more than 8,000 survey responses were received and carefully integrated, reflecting a commitment to community engagement and public participation,” said Brian Pettet, public works director for Pitkin County.

The CRMP contains three dozen recommendations, each equipped with actions, timeframes, and the identification of agencies necessary for implementation. The CRMP is framed around five focus areas: Conservation and Preservation, Experience, Access, Activities, and Management. It’s designed to provide a framework for sustainable management while fostering positive visitor experiences and protecting the natural environment.

Members of the project team include Pitkin County, The City of Aspen, the White River National Forest, Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, Aspen Skiing Company, Aspen Chamber Resort Association, and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“These partners are poised to prioritize and commence work on the high-importance recommendations in 2024. This proactive approach underscores a commitment to addressing critical aspects and ensuring tangible progress,” said Pettet.
