Aspen, CO (March 8, 2019) – The
22nd Winter Words series concludes
March 12 at Paepcke Auditorium with
Jane Mayer, a longtime writer for The New Yorker and author of the acclaimed nonfiction book “Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right.” Mayer will discuss her work with
Carolyne Heldman, a media strategist and former executive director of Aspen Public Radio.
A staff writer for The New Yorker since 1995, Mayer is the magazine’s chief Washington correspondent and covers politics, culture and national security. Last fall, she helped break the news about sexual-misconduct allegations against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Mayer’s New Yorker editor recently told Elle magazine: “She’s the best investigative reporter in America.”
In addition to her reporting for The New Yorker, Mayer has written four best-selling books, including, most recently, “Dark Money,” about the influence of money on the American political system. The book addresses such questions as why economic inequality in the U.S. is continuing to increase and why efforts to combat climate change have been repeatedly defeated. The New York Times named “Dark Money” one of the 10 best books of 2016.
The Winter Words series kicked off with world-famous rock climber and memoirist
Tommy Caldwell, before a sold-out crowd, on January 8. Other speakers this season have included novelist
Emily Jeanne Miller (January 29), Pulitzer Prize winner
Colson Whitehead (February 12), and acclaimed authors and professors of religion
Kate Bowler and
Elaine Pagels (February 26).
