The Wheeler Opera House, in association with Telluride Mountainfilm, will present the documentaries “180 Degrees South: Conquerors of the Useless” and “The Fisherman’s Son” as part of its Aspen Mountainfilm Monday Night Docs series.
“180 Degrees South: Conquerors of the Useless” follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of his heroes Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia. Along the way he gets shipwrecked off Easter Island, surfs the longest wave of his life – and prepares himself for a rare ascent of Cerro Corcovado.
“The Fisherman’s Son,” which was recently named Best Film at the 2015 Allianz Portuguese Surf Film Festival. Directed by Chris Malloy, “The Fisherman’s Son” follows the trajectory of Navarro as a boy who came from a fishing family, one of many that have long earned their livelihood from the bounty of the sea. Only this fisherman’s son found his passion riding the breaks just beyond his front door.
