Discover the diverse birdlife of the Roaring Fork Valley with ACES. Birders of all experience levels are welcome! Outings meet at ACES’ Hallam Lake Nature Preserve or Rock Bottom Ranch (see dates for corresponding locations), and begin with a brief orientation, followed by birding in the field. We explore bird activity in a variety of local habitats at these ACES sites and at other nearby birding hot spots. Every outing offers rich opportunities to learn about bird behavior, identification, migration, and local habitats.
About the instructor: Rebecca Weiss is a Naturalist specializing in birding, botany, and interpretive program development. She first came to ACES as a Summer Naturalist in 1993, later directed the Naturalist Field School and worked with ACES' Naturalist Programs. She currently guides for ACES' Birding Program outings and is involved with the center's interpretive and custom programs. Rebecca is also a professional writer, developing trailside natural history interpretive signs in the Roaring Fork Valley and elsewhere in Colorado, as well as other writing projects. Rebecca is the author of Birds of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley. She holds a BS in Biology and an MA in Environmental Education, and loves exploring the natural world with her husband, Austin, and their children Anders and Elsie.
What To Bring:
Bring your own binoculars (or borrow ours) and guide book (optional). Be prepared for cool temperatures and walking both on- and off-trail. Please dress in warm layers and sturdy footwear.
How To Get There:
Please bike or walk to ACES whenever possible! We understand that you'll need to drive to ACES for certain classes - 6am birding classes, photo field trips, etc. However, when you can, make it a personal challenge and see if you can drive fewer times than last year! Parking at ACES is limited.
