February Birding at Hallam Lake

Birding in fall, winter, and early spring is great exercise for your identification and field craft skills. Join us on the first Tuesday of the month from November through April and discover the joy of birding! We will learn about non-breeding plumages, winter foraging strategies, and behaviors of migratory and resident birds. We often enjoy excellent views of birds in the absence of summer’s foliage and close encounters where birds flock around food sources. Designed for birders of all experience levels, we focus on birding tips, sharing our observations, and the fun of connecting with nature. Every outing is a treasure hunt in the diverse habitats of Hallam Lake.

About the instructor: Rebecca Weiss is a Naturalist specializing in birding, botany, and interpretive program development. She first came to ACES as a Summer Naturalist in 1993, later directed the Naturalist Field School and worked with ACES' Naturalist Programs. She currently guides for ACES' Birding Program outings and is involved with the center's interpretive and custom programs. Rebecca is also a professional writer, developing trailside natural history interpretive signs in the Roaring Fork Valley and elsewhere in Colorado, as well as other writing projects. Rebecca is the author of Birds of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley. She holds a BS in Biology and an MA in Environmental Education, and loves exploring the natural world with her husband, Austin, and their children Anders and Elsie.

What To Bring:

Bring your own binoculars (or borrow ours) and guide book (optional). Be prepared for cool temperatures and walking both on- and off-trail. Please dress in warm layers and sturdy footwear.

How To Get There:

Please walk, bike, bus, carpool, or ski to ACES sites whenever possible (yes, you really could cross country ski to ACES when there is enough snow). Parking at all sites is extremely limited and alternate transportation is fun and saves the planet!
