Time Travel Tuesdays: "Songs of Suffrage" Historical Opera
In honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote in the United States, Aspen Historical Society welcomes the University of Northern Colorado Opera Theatre to the Wheeler Opera House to present Songs of Suffrage: the Music of a Movement, featuring selections from The Mother of Us All, a fanciful historical opera, written by Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein that chronicles the life of Susan B. Anthony. Songs of Suffrage is a 50-minute homage to the movement, with the music of The Mother of Us All interspersed with narrative and protest and march songs of the period.
UNC opera theatre is presenting Songs of Suffrage on their #changingthenarrative tour throughout Colorado in the spring of 2020 as part of the Colorado Women’s Vote Centennial celebration. Throughout the 2020 election year, AHS joins nationwide anniversary celebrations with local programs and initiatives that honor the nation’s largest expansion of voting rights in history, and more specifically, Colorado’s progressive suffrage journey. (Thanks to statewide grassroots efforts, Colorado passed a popular referendum in 1893, becoming the first state where men voted for a state referendum that passed women's suffrage into law.)
We are honored and excited to partner with UNC to present this special performance that celebrates inclusive democracy. According to the program coordinator Courtney Caston, their goal is “not just to raise awareness about Susan B. and the work she did but expose our audiences to UNC opera theatre and give our students a professional tour experience.”
